This is the case, when an original novel and screen adaptation both are really good (I'm mean a movie directed by David Lynch [1984]). They are quite different, but they both are masterpieces in their genres. But today we will talk about the original novel by Frank Herbert.
I've read this book after watching of David Lynch's movie, and because of that, during reading, I've represented in my minds characters of this book with faces of actors from this movie.
The plot occurs in the far future, humanity made an epic technology progress and populated many planets of the universe. Because of very long time from the resettlement date, and huge distance between planetary systems, humanity was divided into different sub-races, that lives in the different earldoms. Their computers adapted their mind to be able to make extremely difficult tasks. Power of their minds can be used by using spice (melange). The only place where this spice is mining is Arrakis, a desert planet, where live giant sandworms. The spice is the most valuable currency, powerful stimulator, and the drug at the same time. All earldoms are the suzerains of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV.
The main character is young Paul Atreides, son of Duke Leto Atreides, the graph of Atreides House (because Arrakis is one of the planets from Atreides domain), the most powerful House of Padishah Empire. In this book, you can find very detail fantastic world, with very interesting describing of religion, culture, technic, society, and other parts of this universe.
This is one of the best books in the science fiction genre, and David Lynch's movie is one of the best films in this genre. You should watch this movie and read this book, it is a world classic of science fiction.
P.S.: This is the offtop, but yesterday's article has quite good success, so I'll write the second part in the few days.
